George and Dudley are two of our Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs)
You may have noticed a few non-hoofed animals in with the goats. These are our livestock guardian dogs - LGDs for short – there to protect the herd. We know the dogs are cute, but they are on the clock! Please do not try to feed, water, or pet the dogs. They are protecting their herd and take the job very seriously.
Did You Know That LGDs…
• Protect the herd from coyotes, stray dogs, snakes, and other predators. • Work in pairs -- one dog patrols the perimeter and one stays with the herd. • Sleep during the day because they patrol all night. • Have special coats that keep them cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and dry in the rain and snow. • Thrive when doing the job they have been bred and trained to do.
At Get Your Goat Rentals, our LGDs are an important part of the team. We visit them every day while they are on the job site to insure their safety. During our daily visits, they are fed, groomed, and checked from head to toe. The have access to fresh water at all times. They are fully vaccinated and provided with monthly heartworm preventative and flea and tick medication. They are accustomed to and equipped for living outdoors.
